Detroit’s electronic music scene is often considered as the birthplace of techno, a genre that emerged in the 1980s, blending futuristic sounds with the city’s industrial backdrop. Pioneers like Juan Atkins, Derrick May, and Kevin Saunderson, known as the Belleville Three, crafted a sound that echoed Detroit’s grit and innovation. Their music quickly gained global recognition, where it fueled the growth of electronic music scenes and subcultures, turning Detroit into a mecca for electronic music.

Underground Resistance (UR) is another pioneering Detroit techno collective formed in the 1980s by ‘Mad’ Mike Banks and Jeff Mills. Known for their raw, industrial sound and anti-establishment stance, UR became a symbol of resistance against mainstream commercialization, deeply influencing Detroit’s electronic music scene and promoting a message of empowerment and social change.

Over the years, the scene has evolved, but it remains rooted in its ethos of creativity, resilience, and a relentless drive to push boundaries. Today, The Motor City continues to influence and inspire electronic music worldwide, staying true to its underground spirit.

We recently connected with Joey, also known as 2Lanes, to explore how Detroit continues to shape and influence the global music scene.
